2025 recipient of the Helen Denise Jones OAM Memorial Arts Bursary - Sophia Lee!
Sophia Lee (18) is an aspiring contemporary pianist / vocalist who has dabbled in every aspect of the arts - ranging from visual arts and music to theatre performance.
Having just completed Year 12 at Hellyer College, she will move to Brisbane next year to commence her degree in the Bachelor of Music at Griffith University Conservatorium.
On hearing news of receiving the bursary, Sophia said, "I have tremendous gratitude and am incredibly motivated. Moving forward from secondary education and commencing further studies on the mainland is all thanks to the endless encouragement that has instilled the vision in me from the get-go. It additionally means continuing on with the steadfast knowledge that no matter how much self-doubt one may experience from time-to-time being involved in the creative field, it's made possible through the opportunities and support from local community and connections, they give you wings and teach you how to use them."
Her future creative projects include composing more music for public release, and working towards becoming a music therapist. To achieve the latter, Sophie plans to undertake further study in Psychology upon completion of her music degree.
Thank you to everyone who applied for the bursary this year. It was an astounding group of talented artists - all with BIG futures ahead.
Sincere gratitude to Susan, Alison and Lix for interviewing the applicants and approaching the final decision-making process with such sensitivity.
I'm sure Helen was watching over your shoulders ✨
